About Saddleback Slate

Martin cutting slate
Slabs of slate

We are a family run business having 25 years experience in working with locally mined and quarried sedimentary green slate formed over 400 million years ago.
The owner Martin Nicholson started work as an apprentice River and Dresser making roofing slates in 1985 at Honister in Borrowdale. When it closed in 1987 he moved to Kirkstone Quarries at Ambleside where he finished his apprenticeship as a river dresser and then moved on to all other aspects of cutting, slabbing, polishing & finishing of slate. When Honister reopened in the late 90's Martin returned and took up the position of manager dealing with the production and ordering side of the business until the move was made to set up SADDLEBACK SLATE in 2010.
